A tablet is one of 2011′s most popular technology items. The tablet is versatile for different types of web users and is easy to carry around. What’s more, it’s great for kids, moms, professionals and students. Online websites such as Offers.com give detailed information on in-store and online deals for finding a cheap tablet PC. Take time to do some research, read some reviews online and prepare yourself properly before diving into the world of tablets. Here are some of the popular ones on the market.

iPad / iPad2

Definitely the most popular, iPads are cost-effective and a great value for your money. The screen size is ideal and the design is the sleekest of any on the market. You can search the web, take photos, play games, email your friends and watch movies all on your iPad.

Nook Color

The Nook Color is affordable, however, its operating system doesn’t compare to that of an iPad. This tablet is ideal for someone just looking to use it occasionally or for children. The Nook was originally designed to read books, so its look and functionality isn’t as great as an iPad either.

These are just two of the many tablet options on the market. It’s important before making a big technology purchasing decision to research online for the best deal available. What one store is selling something for is not always comparable to another store, so look around for a while and take your time before buying your tablet.

A lot of people are under the impression that the only way to go when you buy electronic equipment is to buy it new. While this is definitely a good idea for some instances, it isn’t always the best way to go. Sometimes buying used electronics is the best thing you can do for yourself on several fronts.

For one thing, used electronics tend to be far less expensive than new ones. While new electronics may be a bit faster and are definitely shinier, older ones can still work just as well for doing what you need done. How much space do you really need in your music device’s hard drive, anyway? Does it make a functional difference to listening enjoyment that you can hold 10,000 songs instead of just 5,000? Unless you’re a serious music connoisseur with a lot of free time, it probably won’t matter in the least.

So when you consider buying a piece of electronic equipment, you have to carefully consider what you’re actually buying. If you’re like a lot of people, you just end up buying the bright, shiny packaging instead of the actual product itself. When you buy something that’s been refurbished by a professional, you can be certain that what you’re getting is the actual product and the functions you want. If you’re just going to buy the packaging, you’re going to pay a lot of money that you don’t need to spend just to have something that you might not really need.

Larry Cole believes in always buying the top of the line. He wants top quality and isn’t afraid to pay for it. Laura, his wife, thinks he wastes money most of the time.

When is it a good idea to buy the top of the line? When can a consumer logically buy a moderately priced or even refurbished item?

Some items should be purchased new. Some baby equipment, like car seats, should always be new. Safety standards have changed over the years and a used seat may not meet the newest standards. And, normal wear and tear from a couple of children can further compromise safety.

Antique cribs or a crib from Mom’s attic are another problem. Modern safety standards for side slat placement are smaller than thirty or forty years ago – so very small babies cannot get their heads stuck between slats and strangle.

Purchasing refurbished items is not as risky as it sounds. A refurbished piece has been returned to the manufacturer or any reason (including the wrong color) or has a missing piece or needs a minor repair. The manufacturer refurbishes or repairs the item and sells it at a discount, often with a full guarantee.

Before you purchase an item, ask yourself how often you will use the equipment. If you are a finish carpenter, buy the top of the line saw. If you cut a piece of lumber every three years, you can go with a smaller, cheaper model. Similarly, if you use a food processor everyday or love to sew, buy the best quality you can afford. You will be glad you did.

Quality versus cost is a battle that wages in almost every purchasing decision. Whether you are buying heavy machinery for a major company or getting a blender for your kitchen, or even grocery shopping, there is always a cheaper way and a more expensive (but usually higher quality) way. So, just when is it worth paying up for a higher quality piece of equipment and when should you settle for something in a lower price range?

While not everyone likes to think of decisions in mathematical/scientific terms, usually a decision between price and quality should be looked at as a cost/benefit analysis. For the cost part, simply state the difference in price between the two products. The benefit part might take a little research. Look for consumer reviews to see how previous customers compare the two pieces of equipment. If the quality equipment is expected to last twice as long as the cheap version, write that down. Also write down how much most people seem to prefer one over the other. When you are done, compare the two. If the quality version costs twice as much, but is expected to last three times as long as the cheap version, it will probably be worth springing for the quality version.

While setting up a cost/benefit analysis might seem like just restating the problem, and it basically is, it can help you compare the benefits and losses of one decision over another. If you are not usually an organized or mathematical thinker, this might seem like a strange approach to you, but it is a very helpful approach in areas such as this.
